In some aspects playing solo might be better since no one else will leave scents leading to your home, lowering the chances that a Russian will murder you. But if you're playing solo you'd have to do everything yourself: farming, mining, curio collecting, hunting, etc. Some people last months solo, others quit rather quickly. It all depends on what kind of game you're looking for.
