requirements for 20k are much lighter, on the other hand

20,000th most frequent word in japanese shows up about 0.7 times per million words, which means we would need to read/hear approx. 17,000,000 words (rather than the 80,000,000 to get the 30k word) to remember it naturally

this translates to roughly:
570 anime cours (570 12ep anime)
1700 manga vols
34 average length vinnies
280 ln volumes

whereas the 30k vocab requirements equated to 10k hours of input, these 20k vocab requirements translate to ~2.25 hours of input

seems like a more sensible goal for those who just want to enjoy japanese media and don't care about wanking off over discord quizzes and reading streams

This graph can be very encouraging because you can recognize 85% of words in media just by learning 2000 of them. However, don’t get discouraged by the second half of the graph. Yes, going from 90% to 95% means doubling the amount of words you know from ~3000 to ~6000. That 5% gain might not seem huge… but it is HUGE! At 90% you’ll look up every 1 in 10 words, at 95% you’ll look up every 1 in 20 words. That’s doubling the amount of words you can read without looking anything up!

even if you do 20 cards a day for a 10000 card deck, and the end youll only be doing 300 reviews which is only like 30 minutes max
it gets even easier when u realize u can just do 5 minutes here and there throughout the day without any problems
so go ahead and challenge urself unless u want to spend 4 years getting n1 level

who said vn core would get you to fluency?
it is just like any other core deck, it is meant to ease you into reading so you don't have to look up literally every word
