As for scanning the books, I'm painfully well aware of the issue that the 'spine' presents.
While what >>14007054 is saying about scanning them without damaging them is true, I wouldn't recommend for somebody that has never scanned anything before try to do this.
You'll (most likely) run into a lot of problems that you weren't expecting... scanning has a weird learning process. Do not attempt, unless you're prepared to destroy the book that you're going to scan.

As for taking photos... you should be able to get away with doing this fairly easily. Just have a small weight on the page that you're taking a picture of while holding the other half of the book and... well, yeah. About the same risk of damage as reading it normally.
