You need to know how to think in order to figure it out early, if you start with a crappy foundation then it'll take 4-6 episodes.
-The first thing is unreliable narration, we get solid evidence for this as early as the episode 1 credits when Maria asks the reader of her message to uncover the truth. Why and more importantly when would she write that? Didn't episode 1 end with her laughing together with the witch at midnight?
-The second thing you need to realize is that whenever Battler gives up or stops believing in himself everything becomes ridiculously magical, the narrator doesn't even try to make sense anymore. A fantasy banquet where Kinzo and Battler are devoured by goat demons? A shonen fight that threatens to blow up the whole island yet no one sees? Sure, why not!
-The third thing is that whatever chess piece Battler doesn't see with his own eyes has a 50% chance of being horseshit. He doesn't see resurrected Kanon fingering his chest pussy and doing backflips while murdering people with magic shoelaces, he doesn't see Kanon and Shannon at the same time in the same room, he doesn't see Kinzo at all, he doesn't see Shannon protecting George from Beatrice...etc.
