I started with Etoile (and that's why I love Francis; he isn't in the previous games). Maybe playing them chronologically would be the best because there are fixed characters that appear in every new generation, but it doesn'r matter. Just start with the game with the character that catches your interest the most. After Etoile I jumped to Neo Angelique and the prologue for every title is enough to understand the universe. If you already like Francis just play Etoile.
