i'd read a lot of harder vns but never finish them for a long time and i had a pretty weird vocab where i wouldn't know shit like 刺身 and 寿司 but i knew shit like 斬, 血振, 磔, 縊る, 刎ねる. now i'm reading LB and most of the stuff that i don't know is shit like 栞, 配偶者 and 芝生, i still know around 90% of the words i think so it wasn't that bad but be aware you'll miss common words while knowing more obscure stuff
