Remi was most likely a country aristocrat 500~ years ago.

During the 15th Century in England, France, and various kingdoms in Germany aristocrats possessed large manors in the countryside that acted like mini castles, with elaborate master/servant ceremonies and a rigid social structure. It wasn't until the 16th and 17th Centuries that kings brought the majority of aristocrats into the capital cities, making them courtiers and reducing their influence.

While many nobles happily went to the cities I imagine Remi was quite dissatisfied with the change and tried her hardest to maintain what little influence she may have had until her mansion and her nobility were all but forgotten by whatever princes she originally pledged allegiance to.

Remilia is the only religion I need.

If merely being in her presence can alter your fate I wonder how Marisa and Reimu's destinies have been changed since they first got involved with her.
