Most of what people call "shy types" are introverts. Introverts come in many different kinds, and Reina isn't really the prime example of the trait since she's someone who is lacking social skills. I think Riho is a quite obvious introvert.

The sad thing is that the western world, and America in particular, glorifies extroversion and thinks of introversion as a fault to be fixed. I think this is the reason so many western fans think Riho is boring, soulless or arrogant. They think someone who isn't super-social has yet to come out of her shell, or is ignoring the environment out of spite. Introverts are just people who have a rich inner world and don't need stimulation from the environment as much as some other people (an example of the opposite, high extroversion, would be S/mileage's Meimi). Eastern Asian countries are known for appreciating introversion in a way the west doesn't and this is also seen in Riho's popularity.
