I agreed shortly afterwards. Reimu was right. She usually was. That's probably why I could trust her so easily. Her whole life was sorting out problems. Lady Kasen had explained some of Reimu's work while I'd been living at the dojo, as well as some of her more embarrassing business failures. Those, I decided to ignore. The incident resolving seemed more important to me. I followed Reimu out of the clearing and back onto the mountain. There, I found Marisa waiting for us. She had her broom resting against the ground on its bristles, while the stick itself rested against her shoulder. "Oh, hey. You're coming, then?" I nodded, not trusting myself to say anything good at the moment. "Cool, cool. You riding with me? I don't think Reimu's in the mood for piggybacks." Reimu snorted, then shook her head.
I imagine it wouldn't have been very comfortable. "Let's get going, then. We can be back before nightfall." Reimu said, her voice starting to sound a bit tense. I felt like it couldn't hold a candle to the tension I felt, knowing I'd be going back to the Bamboo Forest.
It didn't take us long to arrive. Once I was on the broom, we took off and flew straight over the mountainside below, before heading over the foliage and straight in the direction of the village. I really had to marvel at how much more convenient it was to fly. I imagine it would have taken me hours to walk to the village from the mountain, and several more to get back. Within minutes, we were passing over the houses. I looked down and saw my street, with my house just the way I'd left it. I even spotted the redheaded waitress from the cafe right by my house. I doubt she saw me, and as we passed by, I mused on how different my life had become. When I'd first approached Marisa, I had wanted to ask that waitress out, because I hadn't really thought that I'd be with anyone other than a nice human girl. How things changed.
We touched down in front of the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, the same entrance that I had went through plenty of times to reach Eientei for my 'physical therapy' sessions. "No sign of her today." Marisa muttered to Reimu, pulling the broom up and onto her shoulder as I stepped back onto solid ground.
"Been like that for a few days." Reimu said. I asked who they were talking about. "There's a guide. Lives out in the forest, and she often gives people who get lost out there a way back here. We haven't seen her in days. Last time that happened was..." Reimu trailed off.
"When she wasn't herself." Marisa finished. I looked between them, wondering if I'd missed something. "Think it's that, again?"
"Nah." Reimu shook her head. "She wouldn't go back for seconds like that." I had no idea who anyone was talking about, and I was a little afraid to ask. "We'll have to do this the old-fashioned way. Come on." And like that, we headed into the Bamboo Forest on foot.
Subconsciously, I must have begun following the path to Eientei. My senses felt stretched to their limits, and the slightest crack of the forest floor was enough to make me jump. "Relax." Reimu said to me. "No one will be expecting you in here. You're safe with us." I nodded shakily, though I didn't feel much more relaxed. Before long, Reimu stopped me. "We don't want to get too close to Eientei. You might have another attack." I agreed, mostly glad that I wouldn't need to go in there. "Marisa. When you and Mokou went in, where did you go from?"
"Huh?" Marisa looked up. "Oh, er..." She frowned, scratching her cheek with one nail. "Think it was over there? There should be a bit of a cliff behind Eientei." She paused for a moment, then turned off at an angle. "Yeah, it was this way." She began walking, so Reimu and I followed. "No, wait. It was this way." Marisa stopped, turning in the opposite direction.
"Do you think she'll remember better if I hit her on the head a few times?" Reimu muttered to me. I tried to stifle a laugh. After a few false starts, we finally wound up above Eientei, on the edge of a small cliff. From here, you could see nearly all of Eientei. "Get comfortable." Reimu said. "We might be here for a while." Marisa sat down, so I followed suit. Reimu remained standing, her arms crossed and a scowl on her face.
"She gets all stiff like this when there's something happening." Marisa whispered to me. "Nothing like how she is at the shrine." Reimu whipped her head toward Marisa, who raised her hands in surrender. It was strange to me, seeing these two interact like this. To most of the village, they were somewhat unreachable figures. Marisa had some pull, but people didn't get too close to Reimu. "I think she thinks of you as her little pet project." Marisa said, even quieter. "Someone with specific problems that she can focus on. Not too wide scale." I wondered about that. It wasn't the sort of thing I'd ever expected in my life. But, there were worse things to be than the Hakurei Shrine Maiden's personal project. My first romantic fulfilment experience had taught me that.

I'm in the same boat, can't really afford to have my power level out in the open but still feel some autistic need to have my background 2hu related. All these new ones are great. Anybody got any more?
