Disgaea 4 felt like the most refined game, I just felt that it failed considerably to capitalize on anything that encompassed it.

Disgaea one and two had a very free pace to them. You could continue the story if you felt like it, or run around forever in the item world, or retract previous stages for perfect scores and secrets. And it was all good, and the powers you got from it was enough to make you able to beat the future stages considerably faster, so it's not as if you ever "wasted" too much time to begin with by not doing the main quests.

But Disgaea 4? Every side-track thingy kind of indirectly punished you.
If you didn't proceed in the main story, you didn't get those council/ambassador positions and evil-symbols or whatever it was, that greatly modified the stat growth of your characters.
If you were to run around doing side thingies instead of the main quest, and levelled up 10-20 levels or something, you could easily found yourself having lost a potential extra growth of 50-100+% that stat growth, simply because you hadn't unlocked the right ambassador positions and evil-symbols.

It did felt more refined. But it really did usher you to move forward all the time. A straight line, with as little side tracking as possible. Then all of as sudden the game was over, and the side tracking became less fun because of that instead. Taking things easy or to stroll around at your own pace exploring the parts you found interesting is more or less punished in game.
The fourth game was better than the third game, but it still really failed to capitalize on the strengths of the first and second game.
