Humanity isn't special. Humans are just other organisms who are n% genetically similar to you. The label "human" applies to this grouping of organisms, as opposed to a larger grouping (such as primate, mammal, animal, etc.) or a smaller grouping (such as ethnic group, race, family, etc.). Whether you consider them important or not is entirely arbitrary. Do bulldogs consider poodles important? Should they? According to you, there is some purpose to "dogity." But no there isn't.

People do need others to procreate, but they don't need that many people. And people do care about other people, but the purpose of that is to pass on your genes using other people as a vehicle. We know this is the case because you can predict how much people get along by how genetically similar they are. Someone genetically similar to you reproducing is almost as good as you yourself reproducing, so it behooves you to help people genetically similar to you to some extent. Of course, everything exists on a spectrum and some people will fall off into the extremes, such as caring about others more than themselves, or caring about organisms that are less and less similar to them, but evolution tends to veto these people.
