There is actually a very recognizable tradition of ball jointed dolls in Japan, that goes way before Volks created the first Super Dollfie in 1999. The introduction of modern bjds in Japan is attributed to Simon Yotsuya in the 60s, who was heavily inspired by Hans Bellmer. Learning and inspired by him, other artist appeared, like Ryo Yoshida and Katan Amano, and its said that the art of porcelain bjd making in Japan was defined by those three. Unfortunately they don't really make dolls anymore, but there are other wonderful artist who do, like Koitsukihime, Hizuki (video related), Etsuko Miura, Saeko Saijo, Hikaru Jinguji, Yogu, Suico, Hanami Natsume, etc.

Here is a video showcasing some artists:

About the price. Yeah those works can be really expensive. I recon something like 30000 to 100000 easily for the famous artists. Japanese collectors of those dolls will pay a lot and the works are sold out very fast. Even so is a dream of mine to be able to buy someday a doll from Koitsukihime or Hizuki.
