I always wondered, though. Even if we let the anime out, so, OK, the shipgirls have no memories of their times as ships, but surely they would know what happened to the ships they were? I mean, it's not like they couldn't read that in any history book, look it up on the internet or whatever? So it's a bit strange hearing Nagato talking about "that light" for example, as by now she would know what exactly "that light" was, even if she doesn't remember herself?

Before KanColle was a thing, designing mecha musume was an absolute shitshow with retarded spikes, random armor, haphazardly placed machine parts, overly large guns. Then Shibafu and Tanaka come and probably think "damn, these are some shit designs", so they went with a more compact and grounded design because for some reason the majority of the nips like going overboard and the rest is history. They just took the most prominent parts of the ship (smokestack, guns/torps) and rolled with it, pretty aesthetic in my opinion.
