It doesn't help that Rosa's development was intertwined with her abusive moments. We see her struggling and regretting her actions way back in Episode 1, and it's a consistent recurring thing throughout the story. At no point is she some remorseless monster who hurts Maria without any care for her. When she ripped Sakutaro, there was a brief moment where she came to her senses and tried to apologize, only for Maria to shove her away in anguish and cause her anger to flare back up. The stuff she says about wishing Maria had never been born was implied to be a nightmare Maria had on the island, a representation of what she fears her mother might think of her.
