Last Episode does mention him returning to how he was back when he was in his hometown so I made the assumption that his body directly returned to how it was back then. I think it'd make more sense for him to return to his old self that is finally free of all of the burdens and hardships that he struggled with in his old life in pursuit of something beautiful. This official TM manga is the best evidence we'll have of this for now.
