I think we just grew up in a strange in-between age. During the pioneer days of the internet the whole thing was very organic and participatory, while now there's a kind of "content pipeline" where the unwashed masses are fed internet culture passively through vines, "4chan story time", meme reviews and so on.
Vlogging, reaction videos, streaming and similar content is basically an internet-age version of the talkshow, the latenight comedy, reality tv, etc.: it's a way of consuming information as filtered through another person. It frees the viewer from having to develop personal opinions without "knowing what other people will think about the way they think". Instead their "opinions" are an intersubjective reflection of other peoples views, carefully constructed with the ultimate goal of appearing "normal yet interesting" to ones peers.
V-tube is definitely a disease, not just a "different but equally valid" way of being - similar to how a lot of people from the generations before us are wasting away in front of the TV. It's not just an internet phenomenon, more like a human phenomenon playing itself out on the internet.
