Starting with the kana is a must obviously.
I'm a beginner myself so I can't exactly tell you if it's right or not but I feel core2k and tae kim is too barebones to really lay a proper groundwork to get into reading. Remember, no additional studying hurts. If you have time on your hand do go through the essentials (tae kim and 2k) but you should also do Kanji studies. Lots of people say you absorb them through vocabulary but that only happens very slowly and tediously. You can work to recognize all needed Kanji within 2-3 months and I find it greatly accelerates the process of learning vocabulary. Other than that you can work through a textbook like Genki which also helps laying a proper groundwork, as a complete beginner it is helpful at least. Tae Kim is also filled with hundreds of advanced vocabulary and it is questionable how much you will retain if you don't know the words as it essentially leaves you unable to do any exercises he gives you and if you don't do those chances are it just won't stick. I suppose in summary I just want to tell you this: don't restrict yourself when it comes to learning resources. More is better.
