Well that particular place is a city built in the core of a world that is nothing but underground and lava. The big columns like the one in the back take energy from the lava and convert it magically to artificial sunlight that it pumps up into higher greener caverns. There's nothing but frozen icewater on the surface.

The city is a technomagic metropolis with a dwindling population of living sickly people and their undead slaves that comprise almost all the regular jobs. Farming, soldiers, servants, etc.

And it's not that undead are taught to do those things. They just keep doing the same things they did in life, because the dead can't learn or change. They are who they always have been.

It just shows how far the living people have shrunken.
