I came here out of curiosity to only find eroge discussion in the otome thread. I don't understand, if you don't care for the romance then why even read visual novels at all? Seems like a book would be more appropriate.

The protagonist in moege only needs to exist to the point where he can bounce off the girls. The game isn't about him, but the characters whom he interacts with. Moege doesn't need complex protagonists because the point isn't to tell a deep story. It's fine if it's not for you, there's plenty of plotge with interesting main characters, but that doesn't mean you need to hate on moege. It's quite good at what it sets out to do.
