Do people who destroy books (name manga, doujinshi, and even artbooks) to translate it afterwards do it waiting for something in exchange? What are the actual intentions behind going that far if sharing it's not the final objective? Being involved in a project where you invest time, effort, and even passion is hard. I myself have bought books, cut, scanned, cleaned, translated and shared with the world the final result withouts asking anything in exchange but to be enjoyed.
It IS a hard job, but if you had the intention to go through all the process of destroying a book and modifying it to share later, why would you be so averse to the public sharing idea? In the case of this patching group, at the very moment they moved a finger to make a game playable in English, they should have known the imminent chain reaction that was going to affect them. Were they mentally prepared for the leak incident? We all now know they weren't. First time being pirates? Welcome aboard because you need to get used to the tides of love and hate when you do something that allows others to enjoy your job without getting anything in exchange. That's how it works.

Assuming that all people here don't know Japanese is underestimating/degrading anons from this site who have helped with projects by other groups from other areas. Perhaps not patching a game, but maybe you have read manga or watched anime that any of us (or part of 4chan) could have translated and proofread. Just take a look at boards such as /a/, /jp/, and even /y/ and you'll find anonymous heroes that have brought you fun directly to your favorite mangareader.
Even some skilled otome fans in Japanase who frequent this poor general could help, but the terms certain gatekeeping groups want to be accepted are just too ridiculous. Ego much? Want to be credited for translations, proofreads, patch, and other technical things but at the same time don't want to be very known so the developers won't catch you.

This problem can be solved:
1. Not patching anything.
2. Working as a completely nomad anonymous group that openly shares. No credits, no names, so no DMCA shit will happen.
3. They could even survive with donations if they decide keeping a group for a while.

But something in the middle, like asking for buying proofs really makes me think about the ethics and mindset people involved in these patching projects have.

Since the incident, I haven't read a single post (at least here) about how a patch kills the otome industry. These games are so niche that Japan doesn't give many fucks about how they get translated. The fact that the games are ripped from original sources is more nocive to them.

It's not a DLcentric thing. It's about how they decide sharing stuff after have hyped fans who felt fooled by them after so many promises that were meant for a small group.
