Despite her class saying Warrior, Mai is a little girl evolved into a witch and pretty much functions as a Warmage. Her default AI seems to like getting into melee range with monsters and alternating between melee attacks and spells while throwing out the occasional cheer. I changed her AI up a bit to make her a bit more efficient using Custom.

I have her just get close enough to tag enemies with magic storm and let the monster try to get close to her to melee. Once they're at that point she switches to melee to converse MP and also because her melee attack is just as good as her spells. Didn't find a need for her to shadowstep to enemies since she rarely has to move much to tag something with magic storm. Might as well have her not take damage if she doesn't need to is what I was thinking. She's usually the first to begin doing damage to the enemies and gets rid of the weaker enemies trying to mob while softening up larger targets.

She holds her own really well in the void and is useful to my party. Her AI pretty much buffs the party when I forget to buff Kai. I could expand on her AI by having her become a backup healer with healing rain. I consider her the kind of pet that fills all the gaps and allows me to be a bit lazy. So a warmage pet imo isn't bad at all and can occupy that spot on a team that needs a little extra help.

The only pain point of a warmage I can see is that since it's kind of jack of all trades/red mage it requires you to level up more skills than a pet that is more specialized. My MA pet only needs two skills to be pumped with AP while Mai takes 4 skills since she casts and two hands a large spear. Since a jack of all trade pets needs extra care, expect that it will take longer for it to catch up with more specialized pets when doing x things. However, if you manage to stick with it they certainly can prove to be extremely helpful.
