Bullcrap. The number of Touhou circles at Comiket dropped because the likes of Reitaisai were created.

Last Reitaisai had 4k Touhou circles. More than any Comiket.

Yes, popularity dropped a little since the peak, but it's like 20% drop at most. And that's mostly because the likes of Kancolle, Granblue or Love Live appeared.
