>What elements does a story need to have to qualify as a 'light novel'?
Short paragraphs
Concise, down-to-earth language--no flowery, excessive description, no adverbs
Driven by character and dialogue, as opposed to plot and description
Motivated primarily by entertainment, easily digestible, no scholarly pretension (ooh lookit im using metaphors)
Novella length (~200 pages, maybe 30,000 words.)

Basically a light novel is a novella without the literary merit, and about ten times as entertaining. But then again, a light novel is different from a short story. It seems we are submitting the latter.

>I wonder if there are any suggestions/requirements regarding writing style as well.
Literature is written in past tense.
For entertainment value and engagement of the reader, 1st and 2nd person are probably preferred.
It's better to stick to some level of realism.

>What is 'grittier'?
real deal stories for real deal readers like myself
>Are non-gritty contributions even allowed?
disney shit

I just want to add that a good short story is short, condensed, and self-contained. It should be a complete story in its own respect. The reader must be motivated to continue at every instant and rewarded--you cannot stagnate with boring, arduous development when you are at risk of losing interest at every second.

I support its choice as a submission format. It's better practice than cranking out a 50,000 word shitstain that no one wants to read. The people who are able to create stable, competent stories with transient, likable characters are the ones whose Japanophile LNs I might actually be inclined to read. It's easier to edit, too.

bump for the closest thing to an OC thread currently on /jp/
