always pissed that, for ages, the terrible people have tarnished the image of Touhou Project so folks unfortunately know it as that meme series of shoot em’ ups, and not as this world that’s really this lgbtq+ utopia we should be reaching for.
i get people having the wrong impression of the series but once you get to the print media and see how ZUN behaves/acts, you kinda realize he’s actually critical of isolationism, homophobia, and even capitalism, and it’s all written out there, no way to deny it. one of the more impressive feats that ZUN ever did was publish Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia, which is pretty much pro-immigration propaganda. it serves as worldbuilding material but it is also critical of how tabloid journalists with agendas might want to spin their content.
his Hifuu albums are even more critical: it depicts our real world set in this dystopian future where capitalism has gone rampant and the environment is destroyed and yet, the characters want to keep on dreaming, because the point of dreaming is turn them into reality.
it’s impossible to avert your eyes and pretend the latest touhou game is really about anti-us imperialism either.
there’s so many good things going on that i think a lot of people can get out of it. i really would like to see more people at the very least learn that touhou is good.
you don’t have to enjoy the shmups or even the world (though i believe many people will appreciate it more than they think). i would simply want more people to take touhou seriously as this rather leftist work with some clever stories.
