I think it's a figure of speech born from the meaning of "to receive/feel in your ears" and "to taste/feel" (like with alcohol).
The fact that every time 奥 is mentioned must mean it needs a noun near it to work.
You probably need to specify what "organ" you're using as a substitute for your ears, tongue or nose to perceive the feeling (as kiku is usually only used with those three).
