I have been doing pretty awful in DDP lately. Used to get near end stage 4 until using my first continue.

You get an extra life when you reach 6 million points. There is also a hidden extra life on stage 3. Near the end of the stage, right before the boss there a big cage in the middle of the red ship. If you destroy if without using bombs, there will be an extra life.
