I disagree, my good man. They frame the face beautifully and the empty space on either side accentuates the neck and collarbones. If the girl has thick hair and pulls it up into flowing, long twintails it's like the best of both worlds.
Assuming, of course, that she has the correct face-shape for that sort of thing to begin with.
