Sounds like a viable plan. One of the hardest requirements of performing kigurumi is good posture. Having a large range of interesting and varied poses is mandatory if you want to perform well. (Either in a photo shoot or in public.) Cosplaying/Cross dressing can prep you for this. Having some costumes can be good as well.

If you are going to invest in a mask, are you going to choose a specific character? I find performers who portray specific characters tend to do better than people who do "generic" ones. (Because they can role play and interact as if they are that character.) Although at the end of the day it depends on the performers themselves.

Go for it, if it's what you want. Which maker would you choose if you're ready?
