I don't regret buying mahoyo because it is extremely rare for a VN to have the level of production values that mahoyo has, but yeah it wasn't very good. If anything mahoyo simply reminded me that nisiosin is a much more capable writer than nasu. picrel is literally orders of magnitude better than mahoyo. it takes the "naive mountain man" character and does vastly more interesting things with it than nasu could ever hope to achieve. mahoyo has some cool ideas, like all of nasu's works, but he just doesn't have the writing chops to turn those ideas into something greater than its parts.

Unironically go read, or watch, Katanagatari. It is a much better story.
