I have an /x/-tier conspiracy theory that the entire series is just a contingency plan for the real Gensokyo. For a setting that relies so heavily on belief and superstition, what better source of alternate "faith" is there than a large, dedicated fanbase in the outside world? The wide variety of interpretations for each character forms a gestalt that further stabilizes their existence. It effectively gives non-flesh eating youkai two food sources, with the added bonus that one pretty much maintains itself.
Also if the barrier ever went down, the fans going "holy shit Gensokyo is real?" would prevent its spiritual residents from immediately dying from mass skepticism.
