>Sanae has no inherent powers. She wasn’t born with “the power to create miracles” like some kind of X-Men character. It’s a skill she’s learned, described as a secret art passed down orally within her family, and she originally did it by calling on the power of Kanako. She was just a cleric, in the D&D sense that she knows the rituals to borrow the power of the gods she worships.

>However, due to extremely poorly thought-out advertising, some of the faith that was supposed to go to Kanako was instead redirected to the priestess performing the ritual. This turned her into a living god, capable of powering her own miracles. If she was stripped of her godhood, she could probably still invoke Kanako, but she’d lose all of her own power and be an ordinary human, albeit for a certain definition of ordinary.

>Could she get it back? Well, technically yes, in the sense that anyone could theoretically be worshipped. But people don’t worship Marisa or Reimu. Being able to cast spells isn’t going to get you worshipped in Gensokyo. Heck, the casual acceptance of gods and youkai would make it harder for to gather faith for herself, since people could clearly see Kanako standing behind her. Of all the humans in Gensokyo, only Sanae and Miko have ever been worshipped as gods. It’s not easy to become a god. It is absolutely a big deal.

>In a more general sense, faith is a powerful mental state. It cannot be faked, and it cannot be handed out like “likes” on social media. Faith implies a deep and intimate sense of trust in the higher power of another. You can’t just start a faith Kickstarter asking to become a god.

Dunno how much sense that makes, but it's something.
