They're called geta. They're traditional Japanese footwear, a sort of wooden sandal with two to three teeth on the bottom raising the rest of the foot off the ground.
Tengu geta only have one because that's cooler. Their affinity for long, powerful strides is great. My head-canon is that it somehow helps with takeoffs and landings.
