>and then one day Roa convinces her that killing her friends and homeless people would be funny
See, in the original VN, for every single incarnation we get a perspective on, Roa doesn't really "convince" you to become a murderer. That's just the innate dead apostle instinct to feed on humans, which is orgasmic and irresistible and makes you go nuts, that is a package deal with him. It fucks your head up so it's easier for a sense of self that is distinctly Roa to take hold as you get pumped full of memories from multiple lives. Roa beyond that exists only as a spiritual "observer" riding his current host who sends impulses based off his desires, but it's all still interpreted by the host themselves, which is one of the reasons why each incarnation has a distinct identity beyond Roa.

Given how Shiki and Akiha work as hosts and the fact that Ciel can continue to exist even after Roa is returned to the Root permanently, it's questionable whether Roa and his incarnations even share a single soul as opposed to cohabitating, but while we get a lot of info on how his reincarnations function, a lot of the specific details are not explored.

The ego of each incarnation of Roa ends up more diluted due to the continuous accumulation of memories and identities, but the original Roa is still there acting as an observer. It's the gaijin reading a book (the ongoing record of his existence) in Ciel's good end who ends up saying "nothing is interesting" as he fades away into scattering pages because Nasu is an autistic buddhistfag who thinks human beings need mortality to live their lives with a sense of purpose and urgency.
