>By the way, how much do redstone circuits differ from real-life circuits in terms of performance and the space they occupy?
Extremely so. Redstone is analogous to electricity in a loose sense.

A redstone signal is either present, or it is not. The least signal provides as much power and the greatest signal.
The one exception is that redstone 'wires' can not normally carry a signal longer than 15 blocks.

A basic AND gate will be 3x3, width and depth. A basic or gate will be 2x3.
An XOR gate is usually 6x3; an XNOR gate is 8x3.

All redstone 'wires' must be kept at least a block apart or they will cross.
A redstone signal cannot easily be transmitted upward.
Redstone signals take time to propagate. There will be some delay.

A contraption of any significant complexity can quickly take up a great volume of space. Hiding wiring from view is more an art than a science.
