Soldiers still function even when direct and indirect fire is going off all around them and the screams of the dying fill the air. All they had to do was grit their death, wait their turn and then charge in and die. Also you usually have some sort of policing force that is holding weapons at their backs giving them to choice to fight or get shot in the back.

I imagine that was Reisen, she forced her comrades into the brink to their deaths then after the entire force was dead and it was just her left, she fled. Coward.
