It's really easy to say "Of course FGO would be popular! It's Fate!" but, as you said, there's a gorillion of other mobages from very well established and popular franchises that have been complete failures. People really underestimate how hard is to make a mobage stay afloat, for every one you see doing moderately well, there's a hundred that didn't go past it's first year. FGO reaching the level it reached, where it's made more money in 5 years than entire franchises have made in decades, it's completely abnormal and impossible to replicate phenomena. Maybe it was luck, maybe it came at the right time and the right place, and this is without taking into account how it managed to survive it's extremely super duper mega hyper BAD launch where as recently told in an interview DW were given a list of demands from TM that if not finished in 3 months they'd just shut down every fucking thing. It's impossible to explain accurately, FGO as a whole is greater than the sum of it's parts and it would still be greater even if the parts were multiplied rather than addition instead.
