Basan is practically just that, a giant heron that breathes fire. Japan has some ridiculous shit like the famous Asseyes, but that thing pales in comparison to the evolution of cockatrice or manticore.

Ghost fires are often souls of the recently dead, or can be an illusion left by kitsune (either to guide the lost or to fool them, depending on alignment and mood of the animal) They are analogous to the western Will o' the Wisps. Souls are represented, in common with the West, as either butterflies or glowing balls. They're apparently wet and slimy instead of hot, compare with Ashimagari.
