I think it depends on where you were at that time. I pretty much only discussed otaku stuff on 4chan and didn't really got that impression. Sure, there was a lot more talk about shitpost or just joke songs, but that's really just mostly denpa. But in general it was just talk about popular producers, collaborations, events, etc, just like now except it all was much less professional back then.
The memes just reflected the era. But consider pic related, it's literally same thing, just in modern format.
