It sounds more like he gives up due to the situation being utter shit - even if he beats the panther, by the time he's done Arc will be up again. So he opts for the easiest way out.

Isn't that just him just coming back to his senses before he dies and realizing it was for the best that it ended this way?
Going by his voice in the last complaint he was still in Nanaya mode - I don't think he'd have any reason to die as long as he stays that way, especially since there's still a few targets left.
