That boils down to whether or not you appreciate your own carving. If you're carving something as a commodity again (e.g those Mexican/SE Asian/etc artisans who mass produce "quaint" wood carvings) it may be loveless. But if you do put a lot of time and effort into it and appreciate the end result, it should be very special to you.

Carving a fetish (pun intended) could be a similar situation. If you create something solely for sexual gratification, then it may not find much appreciation outside of immediate sexual gratification. Do all porn artists take pride in their work outside of the profits/Twitter views/immediate sexual gratification? There are plenty who know how to draw and they put out works like that for a living by monetizing it. But if you carve something because you really like the object of your carving, then that should make it something far more special to you.

I think a lot of that comes down to the mentality on /jp/. In any fanbase, you have content creators and content consumers. Some consumers feel bad because they do not have any marketable talents which they can offer to the fanbase. They can cope 3 ways: a) quietly appreciate the fanworks with nothing in return, b) create fanworks anyway (usually Walfas or Deviantart tier stuff) or c) self-flagellate/put others down for not being good enough fans.

Some western fans (a good number of /jp/sies among them) are lazy NEETs who don't care to learn a skill and offer their elitism by screeching about secondaries and others who aren't "real" fans. I doubt even the biggest Japanese content creators give the least of a shit over "secondaries", I think they're more than content that people appreciate their art/games/music/etc.
