What is this?

/jp/ has started on a project to translate the visual novel Hatsukoi.

Are you in need of translators?

Of course! Anyone with knowledge of Japanese (and English) is welcome to join in and start translating with the simple and easy-to-use REtrans™ Web Interface.

Are you in need of editors?

Definitely. You don't even need to know Japanese to help improve the English text, so your participation is encouraged.

What is the length/progress/ETA?

The total length of the content is approximately 32k lines. We have translated a little over 10% of that as of this post. At our current rate of ~150 lines a day, we'll finish sometime in April of 2010. But the more translators we have, the faster everyone can enjoy the results! If we get to 400 lines a day, we'll finish before the end of the year.

We all want this game translated faster.
No doubt there will be some inconsistencies between the sections each translators do, but I'm sure it will be much easier to later fix and equalize it all.

In the meantime, we could try to work out some consensus together, to help the translators who already don't know what to do.

Here is my opinion: I think the text should be translated to keep as much as possible the same "feel", the same "meaning", the same "intent" as the original. Not necessarily a literal translation in which the meaning, or intent, could be lost. Hence the keeping of Onii-chan (ok not the greatest example, but the only one that came up until now. In this case it's just to keep the "feel")

Our project manager has already stated his opinion on the subject here >>3311667
We seem to agree.

I encourage all those following this project to give us their opinion on this, and we will take it as a "vote", hopefully resulting as a happy consensus for everyone.

Also, translators, feel free to give us some examples, so we can discuss them together, and eventually you will get a feel of what we are all looking for and the next questions will be easier to decide by yourselves.

I think a possible solution would be to save the text each time it is changed. That way it yould be easy to revert it back to a previous iteration. All iterations would be saved somewhere.

If this game get’s translated, I’m might use it as part of my learning of Japanese. It would be fun not only to have both Japanese and English versions of a text, but also actually find the text interesting.
