Indeed, idol means a different set of expectations than singer. Sora, Miko, Suisei, and any other holos that participate in idol/seiso culture by avoiding relationships with men, including the less musically-focused like Pekora and Aqua, actively adhere to these expectations to please specifically those that advocate them. Westerners hate the expectations of idols, ergo they hate people that support and fund idols for meeting those expectations, ergo they hate the most idol-esque holos based on how idol-esque they are. It's like someone saying they hate vtubing culture but don't hate [vtubers], it's hypocritical doublespeak that thinly veiled antis use to dogwhistle eachother.

Attacking the fandom is the same as attacking the idol. Attacking the culture is the same as attacking the idol. Redditors won't hate on idol holos directly, they'll ignore them and talk shit about their fans instead, or criticize over not inviting men into events. It's like smearing someone behind their back, their work, or their friends. Westerners have been overall anti-Miko ever since EN came around and the ENs started seeing scrutiny toward their personal lives. We already saw that shark's predominantly western fans have zero restraint and will attack a much smaller holo over the slightest perceived offense.
