This. It blows my mind talking to older people because their generation didn't really have money left over for luxuries, but it wasn't an issue. Now the typical family has *two* working members, and people complain it isn't enough.
A great documentary I suggest everyone watch is The Century of the Self. It basically shows how the teachings of Freud and his family led to modern consumerism. Pretty eye-opening to discover how recent our superficial lifestyles are.
