I don't think BA is popular for the same reason, Uma Musume maybe since it has plenty of horses that look grounded and simple in a tasteful way but BA seems to be the next AL doing as much as possible to have the next queen of doujin porn.

But yeah I agree with your point regarding why the potatoes are endearing despite being so simple and "bland" in terms of design. The details and lines have this kind and peaceful air to them kinda like pic related.
KC in general is great at conveying a lot of charm and personality with its designs, another great example being how many abyssals don't look just like evil bitches but also having an air of tragedy and melancholy.
Just like how potatoes outclass your average gacha school girl, abyssals outclass all the "edgy pale bitch" other gacha games have introduced.
