The annual AKB48 Election was held on the 16th of last month in Nagoya Dome. Holding on to her trophy with the number 38, Onishi Momoka was overcome with tears of joy. She had been part of the group for 5 years, but this was her first time ranking.
Standing in front of roughly 30000 people, she expressed her gratitude. "I think that I really managed to make my parents proud, thanks to all of you!"
The following day, July 17th, was Father's Day.

Ever since puberty, Onishi never really got along with her father. As a truck driver he was always on the move, and whenever he would show his face at home, what Onishi would hear from him most of the time was abusive and hateful language.

Even when she passed the audition, which she undertook because she longed after Oshima Yuko, her father's rather cold reaction was, "You're so ugly though, is that going to be okay?"

In the spring of 2014, Onishi began her activities as an idol. Travelling back and forth between Tokyo and her home in Nara, she continued to not see her dad for about half a half a year.

And suddenly, without warning, they were to be separated forever.
Having already been in bad shape for a few days, Onishi's father collapsed at home and passed away. He was 44 years old. Not a single time had he seen his daughter live on stage.

Onishi's first birthday after joining AKB was supposed to be the day when all of her fans were to wish her well and congratulate her. Instead, it became her father's funeral.

Shortly afterwards, Onishi was handed her deceased father's mobile phone. There was a video on it which appeared to have been taken somehwere at a bar. Visible in the video was a TV, and on the TV screen: Onishi, talking about how she would do her best in AKB.

As he was filming, the ecstatic voice of Onishi's father was audible: "She looks amazing!" and "Newsflash, I have a celebrity at home!"

Also on the phone were text messages with Onishi's father joyfully telling friends how excited he was about his daughter.

"When I first heard him say these things I just couldn't believe it, I was full of regret. I wish I had talked to him more often."
