Ya-huh. By that, I really do mean in the strictest sense of the world "otaku." I find (or used to find, anyway) a ton of enjoyment in highly niche topics. Trade policy is my bread and butter and I also have interests in related topics, like copyright/piracy issues and cybersecurity.

These niches used to be fairly insulated from the typical partisan dreck you will come across. There's a prohibitive level of education required to research bills up for discussion, parse committee outcomes and (if viable) try to influence a committee member or members with your research. This is usually accomplished by directly subsidizing his own staff's research efforts with your own information or outright lobbying him for changes. Pushing back against this is primarily the apathy of the committee legislators and their flunkies (who often filter what gets to a congressman or member of parliament) and the activities of other stakeholders that are personally invested in the topic.

Career paths for people with my interests generally lead to becoming a professional lobbyist, an academic researcher or a journalist. The first option requires you to be an ubernormie with zero problems in socializing, and successful academic work on policy typically requires dwarf fortress levels of autism. I tried journalism for a bit, but in the web 2.0 era no one is hiring people to write anything other than "THESE 34 PICTURES OF SLOTHS WILL RESTORE YOUR FAITH IN HUMANITY."

2016 made things even more frustrating because everyone decided they're populists now and that they hate ``the establishment'' which is typically interpreted to mean anyone with education, nuanced opinions and some influence within government. So in addition to the above you now have randos from all over the political spectrum calling you a fascist cuck whatever for having opinions that don't perfectly align with the right or left wing talking points of the day.

I'm working an internship/uni student combo at the moment but I have zero interest to pursue this further. All financial incentives in the field are pushing people to adopt the most extreme position possible, in order to attract donations and ad money from committed hyperpartisans. Educated suggestions get drowned in a sea of assholes demanding contradictory or self-destructive policies and lawmakers are more willing to listen to them since they have the most votes and donations. I've never considered myself an ideologue, I find ``````debate'''''' as it currently exists online to be useless noise, and I don't really want to get doxxed because some anonymous twitter autist disagreed with my views on import tariffs.

I know that withdrawing from my interest just gives partisans more space to shit up but, again, our media and political institutions are basically incentivizing people and parties to become more and more extreme over time. It's a lot less depressing to just work some corporate cut-out job and spend my days learning Japanese so I can translate H manga and play eroge

Does everything extract fine but just not run? If so, it might be a locale problem. Go to your Control Panel, Regional Settings, Advanced, and set 'Language for non-unicode compatible programs' to 'Japanese' (requires restart). That might fix it.
