The trick for me was hard-focusing on grammar first. I had been talking to a family friend and language came up and he told me to focus on the grammar first and then let your brain fill in the topical blanks on its own for the vocabulary after you actually understand the core of the language. It mostly worked for me.
There's still a ridiculous number of words I don't know, but at least its advanced to where I'm able to identify it was a word I don't know instead of it just being a mess of mysterious sounds.
