“Oh, are you injured mister?” She asked as she neared us.
“No, no just winded little one.” He replied.
“Hey no fair! Yukari said I’d get me some fun new playmates! But you look like you’ve already had all the fun!” She stomped her feet.
I would haunt and jeer at the best of them, but even I knew that the Scarlet Brat wasn’t to be trifled with. Ah hell, maybe a little, had to buy time for Goro to recover after all!
“Ey brat.” I told her, setting Goro down and picking up two rocks “What’s your name?”
“Flan.” She said, look disapprovingly at me.
“Well Flan, I bet I can toss this rock farther then you can toss this one!” I tell her, flinging a stone at her.
“No way! You look way too weak!” She said. “Here, watch!”
With an impressive wind up the girl spun like a tornado and sent the rock hurtling through the air, far off into the horizon. I’m pretty sure if I was listening hard enough, I could hear it smash into tiny bits on the Harkurei barrier.
“See!” The little brat said with a confident smirk.
“That’s pretty good squirt!” I say winking to Goro. “But I can do you one better!” I say, gingerly tossing the stone into the air, which proceeds to meekly fall almost to the ground.
“Hey! You didn’t even try! Are you making fun of me!” She pouted, clenching her fists. “If your not gonna play seriously I’ll just smash you and go-“She shouted, but stopped.
The stone rose into the air, slowly at first, and began to pick up speed. Flipping gravity sure was useful after all.
As the stone became a tiny speck in the night sky I smirked back at the Scarlet Tyke “Looks like I win!”
“Ah! No fair, no fair! You didn’t tell me I could use my ability!” She cried.
Reaching a hand into the night she closed it into a fist, and I heard a faint pop well above us.
“How about that? My stone certainly flew farther then that!” She declared smugly.
“Flan-chan, that was very clever!” Goro declared, walking over to her.
“Eh wah?” Flan blurted out, surprised by the sudden praise.
“We didn’t even think about using our ability on your throw! You sure got one on us.” He said, patting her head.
“Uh, yeah! I’m not just strong after all! I’m pretty smart to!” Flan proudly declared.
“Hm? Then how about a game of wits then?” Goro said, pulling three cups from his sack and a piece of candy.
Grabbing a flat stone, Goro set all three teacups upside down and slid the candy under it. Oh, this was going to be fun.
“The game is simple, I’ll put this this candy under one of these cups and slide them around, then, you guess which cup it’s under. If you guess right, you get the candy if you guess wrong, we win. It’s a little dark out, so I’ll go easy on you, okay?” He explained.
“Don’t worry about that! Flan is used to seeing in the dark after all! I don’t even need my ability for this!” She asked.
Goro lifted a teacup and placed the candy under it. Then he began sliding the cups around and swapping their positions rapidly. Goro’s ability wasn’t bad, but I could see Flan’s eyes were locked on the cup with the candy, which would be great if this was such a game of skill.
“There. Take your guess.” Goro presented.
“That one!” Flan said, placing her finger on the right cup.
Goro lifted the right cup to revel nothing then the center cup to reveal a singular candy.
“Hey! You used an ability didn’t you! I didn’t take my eye off that cup for a second!” Flan said, gnashing her teeth and clenching her hand.
In that moment, the cup in Goro’s hand popped out of existence, utterly destroyed. He remained mostly unfazed.
“You followed the cup very well Flan-chan! But take a look.” Goro said.
Placing the two remaining cups in front of him, Goro slid the candy under one and swapped them much as he had before, but slower. As he did the last swap, he flicked the cup, sending the candy into the cup next to it.
“See? This isn’t just a boring game of watching cups you know, that would be too boring for someone smart like you Flan-chan! Let’s keep going.” He said, pulling out another cup. “Best two out of three.”
“Alright.” Flan said.
Again, Goro did his cup swapping and Flan watched, this time her eyes darted all over the place following every single movement he made and this time Goro really showboated it. Flinging the cups instead of sliding them, turning them upside down, juggling the candy between them in the open, until finally all three cups where once again face-down and presented.
“That one!” Flan said after some hesitation.
Slowly Goro began to peel back a cup she hadn’t chosen. Empty. Then he slowly tilted the chosen cup back, watching the eyes of the vampire child in front of him to reveal the glistening prize.
“Yes!” She said, snatching the candy and plopping it into her mouth.
“Alright, lets up the stakes for the last round.” Goro said, putting two candies under the cup.
