Vocaloid characters being cartoon characters make them much more approachable for everything but singing. Drawing them, making music videos, 3D models, games. If they look like normal people (like the S1M0NE movie) you'd need hollywood level CG to animate, and you have almost no flexibility in her design compared to all the fan Miku versions.

Vocaloid is perfect for the indie base as it is. I'm sure in the future when they nail realistic voice synthesis and photo-realistic CG models the giant records (like the idol industry, k-pop industry and american pop labels) will create expensive human-like singers that can work non-stop without complaining (making performance worldwide, performing in dramas and talk shows, talking to fans in paid events) and are engineered in all aspects to be popular. But it won't be the same thing.
