The problem with *that* explanation is that it doesn't explain why e.g. dragons are harder to breed than devil bugs - this being a necessary condition that the Demon Realm doesn't just steamroll insta-kill the Order.

I headcannoned that it was something like... the stronger monsters burn spirit energy into demon energy faster (this being a cause/effect of their power level), which means that by the time the sperm reaches the egg in higher monsters it's had all the life force sucked out of it.

That's a correlation, but not a logically necessary correlation. There's nothing in biology that says you can't have a long life and a thousand kids. I agree most things don't, but there's not, like, a specific gland that can only give you one of lifespan or kids.
